What does Thyroid Ablation mean?

Thyroid nodules are lumps in the thyroid gland, which are usually benign. If large enough, benign nodules can cause symptoms of pressure in the neck and difficulty in swallowing due to their size. They may also produce a visible or palpable swelling in the neck.

Radiofrequency ablation reduces the size of benign thyroid nodules. The technique uses a special needle which is guided into the thyroid nodules under ultrasound guidance. An electric current is passed through the needle tip, heating the thyroid tissue immediately around it.

The procedure is carried out with the patient awake and the area is anaesthetised with local anaesthetic all the patient feels is mild pushing in the neck. The procedure takes 20–40 minutes depending on the size of the nodule. Maximum reduction in nodule size is achieved at 6 months.

The same radiofrequency ablation technology is also used at IRCC Pakistan for Radiofrequency Ablation of Osteoid Osteoma and Varicose Vein Ablation demonstrating its versatility across multiple conditions.

Benign thyroid nodules

This treatment is used to treat benign thyroid nodules that cause:

Compressive symptoms ( difficulty in swallowing, difficulty in breathing or a significant neck lump)

Uterus Illustration

Hyper functioning thyroid nodule (a nodule that produces excess thyroid hormone)

For patients with thyroid cysts rather than solid nodules, IRCC Pakistan also offers Thyroid Alcohol Cyst Ablation as an alternative minimally invasive option. Additionally, patients with thyroid conditions affecting blood supply may benefit from Thyroid Artery Embolization.

How can Ablation help?

The aim of this treatment is to reduce the size of nodular thyroid tissue in order to relieve pressure symptoms and reduce visible swelling in the neck. Unlike surgical removal, RFA precisely targets only the nodule leaving healthy thyroid tissue intact and preserving normal thyroid function. This is a key advantage over traditional thyroid surgery.

For patients dealing with other thyroid-related tumors or nodules, our Interventional Oncology team provides comprehensive minimally invasive care.

What should I expect after ablation?

Pain after procedure which wears off quickly. Patients are usually discharged home 30 minutes following the procedure. The thyroid gradually reduces in size over the first month with an expectation that by 1 month following the procedure the treated nodule will reduce in size by 40-60 %. This reduction in volume continues and is maximal 6 months post procedure.

Some patients with large nodules may benefit from more than one course of treatment to reduce the size of their nodule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thyroid RFA is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure in which radiofrequency energy is used to heat and shrink benign thyroid nodules. It is performed under local anesthesia using ultrasound guidance, no surgery, no scars, no hospital admission required.

No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia so you will feel little to no pain. Most patients only feel mild pressure or pushing in the neck area during the procedure. Any mild discomfort after the procedure typically resolves within a few hours.

Within the first month, patients can expect a 40–60% reduction in nodule size. Maximum reduction is achieved at 6 months post-procedure. Some patients with larger nodules may require more than one session for optimal results.

No. Unlike surgery, Thyroid RFA precisely targets only the nodule while leaving surrounding healthy thyroid tissue intact. This means your normal thyroid function is preserved and hormone levels remain unaffected in most cases.

Thyroid RFA is a well-established, globally practiced procedure with an excellent safety record. Possible but rare side effects include temporary voice change, mild neck pain, or skin redness at the treatment site. Your IRCC physician will discuss all risks with you before the procedure.

Thyroid surgery requires general anesthesia, a surgical incision in the neck, hospital stay, and carries risks such as permanent voice changes or damage to parathyroid glands. Thyroid RFA requires none of these it is scarless, performed under local anesthesia, and patients go home within 30 minutes.

Treated nodules continue to shrink after RFA and rarely regrow. However, new nodules can develop in the thyroid gland over time. Regular ultrasound follow-ups are recommended to monitor thyroid health.

Thyroid RFA is not suitable for patients with malignant (cancerous) thyroid nodules, patients who are pregnant, or those with certain anatomical challenges. A thorough evaluation including biopsy confirmation of the benign nodule is required before proceeding.

Thyroid RFA uses radiofrequency energy and is best suited for solid benign thyroid nodules. Thyroid Alcohol Cyst Ablation uses ethanol injection and is more suitable for fluid-filled thyroid cysts. Our IRCC team will evaluate your nodule type and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Yes. IRCC Pakistan is one of the leading centres offering Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation performed by expert interventional radiologists. Book an appointment today for a consultation.

Pakistani women largely unaware of uterine fibroid!

For decades, women with uterine fibroids, or benign growths inside the uterus, commonly have been offered two options to manage the symptoms—get a hysterectomy, or just deal with the pain.
