Radiofrequency Ablation of
Osteoid Osteoma — Non-Surgical Bone Tumor Treatment in Pakistan

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive, CT-guided procedure used to treat osteoid osteoma a painful benign bone tumor. An interventional radiologist precisely locates the tumor using imaging and destroys it with a heated probe, eliminating pain without open surgery. This is the same image-guided interventional approach used across IRCC Pakistan's musculoskeletal pain services, including Genicular Arterial Embolization for Knee Pain, Plantar Fasciitis Treatment, and Tenosynovitis Treatment.

What is an Osteoid Osteoma?

Osteoid osteoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor of the bone, most frequently found in the legs but can occur in nearly any bone in the body. Usually osteoid osteomas are small tumors that measure less than an inch across. They typically form in the long bones, especially the thigh (femur) and shin (tibia). They may also develop in the bones of the spine, arms, hands, fingers, ankles, or feet.
Osteoid osteomas tend to be painful, causing a dull, achy pain that can range from moderate to severe often worse at night. They occur more frequently in men than in women and typically affect children and young adults up to around age 24, though they can occur at any age. Unlike other chronic pain conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis or Tenosynovitis, osteoid osteoma pain originates from inside the bone itself and requires precise image-guided treatment to resolve.

What are the symptoms of an osteoid osteoma?

The most common symptom of an osteoid osteoma is pain not caused by an injury. The pain is often achy and dull. The pain can be intense. It often tends to get worse at night. It may even wake you from sleep. Over-the-counter pain medicines, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, may help ease your pain. Depending on the location, other signs and symptoms can include:

Curvature of the spine (scoliosis)

Enlargement or deformity of a finger

Joint pain and stiffness

Limping

How is an osteoid osteoma diagnosed?

Many people with osteoid osteomas have pain for months or even years before seeing their healthcare provider. In children, people may assume the pain is from growing pains. Unlike growing pains, physical activity has no effect on the pain of osteoid osteomas.

X-rays can help your healthcare provider diagnose the osteoid osteoma. On an X-ray, the bony shell appears white and the nidus will appear dark.

At times, other imaging studies can help make sure the diagnosis such as:

CT scans

MRI scans

Bone scans

How is an osteoid osteoma treated?

Osteoid osteomas may shrink on their own. But that usually takes years. Some people get pain relief from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Because osteoid osteomas can be quite painful and take a long time to go away, interventional radiologist often treat them more aggressively.

Interventional radiology treatment options include:

Uterine Fibroid Embolization Patient

Radiofrequency ablation

A CT-guided procedure where an interventional radiologist precisely locates the osteoid osteoma and uses a special heated probe to destroy it. The procedure can be performed under general or regional anaesthesia. Patients are often able to go home within a couple of hours and return to school or work within a few days making it far less disruptive than open surgery.
For patients also dealing with related vascular or bone conditions, IRCC Pakistan's Interventional Oncology team provides comprehensive image-guided care beyond benign bone tumors.

Who is a Candidate for Radiofrequency Ablationof Osteoid Osteoma?

You may be suitable if you:

Have a confirmed diagnosis of osteoid osteoma on imaging

Experience persistent bone pain not relieved by NSAIDs

Are a child, young adult, or adult with symptomatic osteoid osteoma

Want to avoid open surgery and its associated risks

Prefer a faster recovery and return to normal activities

Patients who choose RFA for osteoid osteoma share a similar preference to those opting for non-surgical musculoskeletal treatments such as Genicular Arterial Embolization for Knee Pain or Peripheral Vascular Disease management effective results without the risks of conventional surgery. A clinical and imaging assessment is required to confirm eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes. RFA is a well-established, proven treatment for osteoid osteoma with a high success rate. Studies show over 85-90% of patients achieve complete pain relief after a single procedure. It is considered the gold standard minimally invasive treatment for this condition.

RFA is performed under general or regional anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Post-procedure discomfort is usually mild and manageable with standard pain medication for a few days.

The procedure typically takes 1 to 2 hours including preparation and imaging. Most patients are discharged on the same day or within 24 hours.

Most patients return to school or light work within a few days. Full return to physical activity is typically possible within 2 to 6 weeks depending on the tumor location and the patient's age.

Recurrence after RFA is uncommon. In cases where the tumor does recur, a repeat RFA procedure can usually be performed successfully.

Yes. Since osteoid osteoma most commonly affects children and young adults, RFA is frequently performed in pediatric patients. The procedure is safe and avoids the more significant risks of open surgery in growing patients.

Open surgery involves larger incisions, longer hospital stays, and extended recovery periods. RFA uses a tiny probe guided by CT imaging no large cuts, minimal blood loss, and patients typically go home the same day with a return to normal activities within days rather than weeks.

Yes. IRCC Pakistan also treats chronic joint and soft tissue pain through Genicular Arterial Embolization for Knee Pain, Tenosynovitis, and Plantar Fasciitis all without surgery.

Osteoid osteoma is a benign (non-cancerous) bone tumor. It does not spread to other parts of the body. However, if there is any concern about malignancy, IRCC Pakistan's Interventional Oncology team will guide further evaluation and appropriate management.

Contact IRCC Pakistan via phone or the online booking form on our website. Our team will review your imaging, confirm the diagnosis, and advise on whether RFA is the right treatment for your osteoid osteoma.
